Our fourth team excursion took us to Southern Styria, where we visited two fantastic wineries, each with a distinct philosophy:
The family-run organic winery of Katharina Lackner-Tinnacher is one of the defining estates of Southern Styria, known for its top-tier single-vineyard wines. Precision, a sense of origin, and great stylistic confidence are clearly evident here. Katharina took a lot of time for us, even showing us the vineyards surrounding the estate.
Domäne 1196, run by Sigi Wolf and Reinhard Muster, is a new, state-of-the-art winery located on historic vineyard sites around Steinbach/Gamlitz. Reinhard Muster gave us a tour of the impressive cellar. Interestingly, the red wines of Domäne Wolf originate from Deutschkreutz. While there, we happened to run into Anna’s director from the Klosterneuburg Wine School, DI Reinhard Eder, as well as my former viticulture professor, DI Robert Steidl.
In the evening, we celebrated at Kreuzwirt – Landgut Pössnitzberg with a wonderful meal. We toasted to our cellar master Stefan’s 26th birthday, as well as the 61st birthdays of Erika & Andor, who were visiting their son in Oslo. The focus was not just on learning and tasting together or looking beyond our own vineyards; it was much more than that—almost like a small family trip.
